A Glass Rainbow in Lubin

Lubin, Poland
1995

Pekao S.A. Bank in Lubin. In the 1990’s the renovation design to upgrade the building from the ground up into a simple glass structure was created in the studio of ABA Barbara and Janusz Targowscy. The reflective glass building, however, lacked dynamics.

Tomasz Urbanowicz suggested setting a 12-meter tall half-rainbow perpendicular to the reflective elevation, achieving in effect a whole rainbow tying into the color of the elevation. The architects and the board of the bank accepted the idea and in 1995 the rainbow was created on the main street of Lubin. The investor was persuaded by the argument that he was only paying for half a rainbow, but was receiving a full one. The rainbow is not going anywhere.
